Chapter Eight

For an hour they headed inland. The chugging of the tiny diesel engine drowned out the other sounds. Diesel fumes were blown into the tiny compartment to mix with the odor of the fish caught the day before. The vent wasn’t working as well as it had on the trip northward, and it was becoming hard to breath in the confined space.

Tynan sat on the deck, his back against the bulkhead, and studied the rubberized map that he had been given. It showed the docks of Hanoi and the canal system so that they could find their way to the NVA headquarters building once they were dropped from the junk. A simple route to it with only two left turns, but they had to be the correct turns.

Then the sound of the engine changed and faded and there were other sounds drifting in. A high-pitched motor that came close to them. There was a quiet thud of wood against wood and shouting in Vietnamese as the harbor patrolmen came aboard the junk. All eyes turned toward Tynan.

He moved to the lever that would drop the deck from under them, opening the bomb bay and letting them escape. He touched his lips with the back of his hand and felt the sweat bead on his face. There was a knot in his stomach. He lifted his hand to the lever and clutched it.

Now there were heavy boots on the deck and more voices in Vietnamese. A command and then an answer. Quieter, humble. More shouting and then a crash like a body hitting the deck. The junk rocked.

Miller motioned at Tynan, telling him to pull the lever. Tynan shook his head, holding up a hand, telling Miller to be patient. There was still time. No one had even come below as of yet.

Then the boots came closer and descended a ladder. There was a pounding on the bulkheads as one of the inspectors slammed his fist against the wood. Then the noise stopped and the footsteps retreated. From topside came more shouting and another crash, but that sounded like someone had thrown something heavy to the deck.

Then there was silence for a moment. The engine of the boat that had approached them revved and pulled away, causing the junk to rock violently for a moment. The tiny diesel of the junk started again and in seconds they were on their way again, heading across the harbor.

“Christ,” said Miller. “What happened?”

“Inspection,” whispered Tynan. “Probably collecting a bribe or two at the same time.”

“Do you think those guys above us are all right?” asked Norton.

“They’ll be fine. If things had broken down badly, there would have been shooting and a lot more shouting. We’d know if it had gone badly. Now let’s settle down. We’ve got another few hours to wait.”

Gonzales moved to the equipment bags and began emptying them. “Let’s have an equipment check.”

Miller and Norton sat on the deck near him and they all began a systematic check of the equipment, weapons, and ammunition.
